Climate Change, Press & Communications Officer

The British Embassy invites applications for the above full-time position.

The Press and Communications Officer will be integral to a large Climate Change, Energy and Sustainable Development team at the British Embassy in Brasilia. You will be responsible for monitoring press coverage on climate, energy and sustainable development issues in Brazil; writing press releases and press articles relating to these issues; communicating UK action to combat climate change; maintaining the internet and intranet sites; and organising and liasing with the press for high-level visits.

Essential requirements: University degree in either Communications, Journalism or International Relations; 3 years relevant professional experience, including experience of communications, campaigns or media work. A good knowledge of the media in Brazil and some knowledge of climate change issues. A wide established network of contacts. Experience doing representational work, including with the media. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Communication skills are required in both spoken and written English and Portuguese, as well as strong IT skills (Microsoft Office). The successful candidate will be a strong team player, flexible and a good multi-tasker and be an excellent communicator and influencer.

Monthly Salary: Salary depending on experience. Start Date: ASAP

To work in the Climate Change Team as a Press and Communications Officer, with responsibility for delivery of press and public diplomacy work.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Monitor press coverage on climate change, energy and sustainable development issues in Brazil; Provide analysis to the team on developments in media; Write press releases and press articles relating to climate change, energy and sustainable development issues. 35% of time
  • Organise and liase with the press for high-level visits related to our work, working with the Embassy Press and Visits teams; Produce the team newsletter for Brazilian and London readers; Support development and monitor implementation of the team’s public diplomacy programmes. 35% of time
  • Maintain the team’s internet site to communicate UK action to combat climate change; Maintain the team’s intranet site. 20% of time
  • Identify and build relationships with a broad range of journalists and stakeholders in Brazil around these issues, to ensure UK policy is well understood. 10% of time
